Sleeping Quarters
What is Sleeping Quarters?
It is a partnership between State Farm, Mitchell Habitat and Mitchell Career Technical Education Academy where students from MCTEA are going to be sleeping in boxes all night to raise awareness and funds to address housing issues facing our communities.
What are the housing issues in Mitchell?
1. Cost burdened rentals. In Mitchell, the share of renter households that are moderately or severely cost burdened increased from 38.5% in 2014 to 40.8% in 2019. So that means that almost half of all the renters in Mitchell are paying 30% or more of their income on housing, forcing renters to make impossible choices of paying for housing, medical services, or other basic necessities. Income growth is not keeping up with rental increases. The monthly median rent in Mitchell rose from $390 in 2000 to $756 in 2019 (growth of 93.8%). During this same period, the annual median family income in Mitchell rose from $43,095 to $64,544 (growth of 49.8%).
2. Need for affordable homeownership opportunities. Between 2000 and 2019, the homeownership rate in Mitchell fell by 9.8%. Median home values in Mitchell have risen $79,900 in nominal dollars since 2000. As of 2019, a median home value in Mitchell was $147,200 (increase of 118.7% since 2000) while income rates have only seen a a growth of 49.8%. Affordable homeownership helps create the conditions that free families from instability, stress and fear and encourages self-reliance and confidence. Studies show that strong and stable households are foundational to child development and growth. When a home fosters — instead of hinders — health and safety, families can flourish. Owning an affordable home also allows homeowners to lift up their entire family by saving for their futures and investing in educational opportunities — bolstering job opportunities and long-term career growth.
Home is peace of mind. It’s a chance to work toward security and opportunity. A decent home is sturdy and safe; it offers space for kids to grow and play. An affordable home leaves financial room for other life essentials such as health care, savings and education.
